15-month-old Maria-Nefeli is a sweet little girl who has been daily struggling, since she has been diagnosed with a rare genetic mutation. When the child came into this world, the doctors noticed that the size of her head was smaller than normal, therefore they referred the family to a university hospital of Athens, in order to be subjected to further tests. The imaging diagnostic tests revealed cerebellar hypoplasia, while according to the whole genome sequencing, which was performed a few days later, the child is suffering from a rare genetic mutation, which causes severe psychokinetic delay and microcephaly.

Today, Maria-Nefeli is 15 months old, however, she is still not able to crawl or speak. She receives anti-epileptic medication, since she is often experiencing spasms, while she is still unable to consume solid food, since she hasn’t fully developed the skill of chewing. According to the pediatrician who monitors her condition, Maria-Nefeli needs to be immediately subjected to physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy, which will allow her to develop her speech and fine motor skills, and to take her first steps. Furthermore, the child requires a series of orthopedic devices, which will improve her balance and her motor development.

The child’s health insurance provider only covers a part of the treatments and the orthopedic equipment, however the family is unable to cope with the remaining cost of her health-related expenses. The mother is no longer working, since the child requires 24 hour care. As a result, the family of five has now found themselves in a dead end.

Little Maria-Nefeli has been struggling ever since she came into this world. Her treatments however, will in fact improve her quality of life. She is not alone. We’ll be by her side, throughout this ordeal. We join forces for Maria-Nefeli!
